Southern Alberta
A'tsimaani takes place in traditional Blackfoot territory, which stretches from the North Saskatchewan River, down along the westerly Rocky Mountains, reaching Yellowstone National Park, and East across much of Saskatchewan today. There are many historical sites to visit in the area, including:
- Writing-on-Stone / Áísínai’pi — Sacred rock art landscape (petroglyphs/pictographs) and hoodoos in the Milk River area.
- Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump — UNESCO site interpreting thousands of years of bison hunting and Plains Indigenous knowledge.
- Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park — Cultural centre at the Treaty 7 signing site with exhibits and guided interpretation (Siksika Nation).
- Okotoks Erratic (“Big Rock” / Okotok) — Major landmark with Blackfoot significance and place-based stories.
- Fort Whoop-Up (Lethbridge) — Historic site exploring the whisky trade era and its impacts in the region.
- Paahtómahksikimi Cultural Centre (Waterton) — Blackfoot-led cultural centre in Waterton (Paah-tó-mah-ksi-ki-mi, “Inner Sacred Lake”) with programs and artisan work.
- Tsuut’ina Nation Cultural Museum (near Calgary) — Museum sharing Tsuut’ina history, artifacts, and cultural knowledge (check hours/tours before you go).
- The Confluence Cultural Centre (Calgary) — Indigenous-focused exhibits and Treaty 7 stories at the Bow–Elbow river confluence.
- Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum (Banff) — Museum dedicated to First Nations cultures of the Northern Plains and Rockies (great add-on if you’re in the mountains).
- Majorville Cairn & Medicine Wheel (Iniskim Umaapi) — Very old, sacred Blackfoot ceremonial landscape; visit only with extra care and follow access guidance.
